I wanted to get started on a demo reel for voice over work. Can I go to any recording studio or does it have to be a specific type or specific engineers? Is there an association or network of good studios or ways to verify the place?

I wanted to create a demo reel for voice work. Any advice would be great. Thanks!

I live in Calgary Canada, I found studios just by going on Google and typing recording studios in Calgary. You can also go to an online phone book like yellowpages.com and type recording studio, and set it to your city. You may need to hire a sound engineer too, to produce your music for you.

There is an alternative. You can get a portable studio, a condenser microphone, an amp with phantom power. Record on your own studio, then produce your voice on the computer. I have some good vocal production tips if you do think about going that route, so just email me if your interested. I know a guy who had a song on the radio with just that set up.

I am interested in learning how to mix digital music like a DJ. I love hip hop but I want to be able to spin at events or clubs as well.
For all you DJs out there, would you consider me getting: serato/torq with tables or a DJ controller/CDJ? Which is the most versatile choice between the two?

Thanks!

I would say a turntable. It’s relatively easy to learn to use one ;) If you decide to buy one check out the site i provided in the source, it’s my friend’s store and it’s really nice.

Is a laptop with an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz CPU and 4GB of RAM good enough for music production? Running programs like abletonlive with vsts? Is it really necessary to get a faster CPU or 8GB of RAM?

yes this configuration is perfectly ok, but if you want to install some advance softwares then you can go for advance configuration. I find this article at internet may be it is helpful for you. link in the source

I am considering changing my major from mathematics to music industry. What kind of jobs are available in the field? Would sound engineer/music producer be within that field? I would love to work for a recording company as the person behind the audio board conducting the recordings. Also, as I have asked a few times thus far, what other jobs are available in the field? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry…the music industry is in the toilet due to the economy…..

There are thousand and thousands of talented, experience people on the street due to the economy…the competition for any job is extreme. …people will do anything for much less just to feed their kids……..I don’t expect it to get any better before 2012……

If there are a lot of good rock bands out there now then what do they lack to not be signed by a major record label.

They lack something that is going to set them apart from the other 5000 bands that are doing the exact same thing as they are, sounding like everyone else, dressing like everyone else, having the same haircuts, blending in like everyone else. Why would a record company want something that is not different that they know they are not going to make money on? They need to have a huge fan base, a huge following to guarntee the label that they will make them money. If you don’t know people in the industry, forget about it. They need to be actual musicians, not someone who taught themselves guitar a few monthes ago and now decided they want to be famous to join a band

I’ve been playing the piano for about 6 years and i’m a freshman in high school. I plan on taking a music theory class next year in hopes of being able to improve my piano performance. I also want to take this so that I may earn a scholarship at a University (UNT or TCU). Is this a wise decision to make by taking this music theory class? What should I expect in that class?

Yes. It will help you to memorize the pieces you play. Instead of being concerned that you remember what is on the page, you will remember melodic lines and chordal changes. It will not help your technique, however. Your piano teacher will do that. BUT, the music theory will help in interpretation and memorization. Definitely…a good class for you to take.

I hope they give you sight singing. You will need that if you go to music school. I found that they glanced over that when I was in high school. You will learn how to write music. There will be a study of chordal progressions and how they are assembled to write particular styles of music.

Music theory is one of the most important classes you can take if you will major in music. VERY VERY IMPORTANT.

BUT, I will say this to you…don’t do it. Minor in music. Don’t go with the major. You will finish and go…how will I make a living? Teach? You have a 1 in a 10000 chance of making enough to survive. Don’t do it. I made that mistake and now I am an accountant getting ready to sit for the CPA Exam.

I will tell you that I am an AWESOME pianist. Not just good…when I was in school the students use to comment that the way I play is the reason why they went to school for music. Like I say…don’t do it. Become an engineer or something like that. Make the denaro and then go into music…

Sorry to be a wet blanket but I am trying to save your life. I don’t want you to end up like me…trying to catch up for 10 years of mistake.

What microphone from argos is for singing into or recording music?

There are different types of Microphones. The DJ type, you can usually talk down. But I would not usually use Argos, they are last resort for items like this.

The ones that I would buy cost about £50.00

Argos used to have a Phillips one for around the £15 mark, but I’m not sure whether it is still there now looking at the site, they may still stock it, otherwise you’ll have to buy the Mikomi one at £5.00, this is slightly better than the £1.00 ones.

Good Luck

My song have my own unique tunes. But i dont know how to play any instrument to give it a musical touch. Would record labels take time to listen in it in acapella?

Honestly, no. Even then, most labels don’t accept unsolicited packages. You gotta know someone either directly or through someone else. Learn how to use some music programs like Logic, Reason, ProTools, or even just GarageBand, and you can create your track on your computer. Don’t wanna take that time? Post around and hire someone to do it. If you’re sending in your song for someone else to sing it, you might wanna send it to a publishing company. If you have a specific artist in mind, perhaps send it to their manager or someone else in their entourage. If this is for you, get a manager, A&R, agent interested in you. They’ll know people. Hell, even people you know right now may have a connection to the inside. Just last night, I learned that my father has a friend who’s friends with the head of a record label in our area. Just make sure, no matter what, you get the song copyrighted before you send it off somewhere.

Good luck, and I hope this helped!
