I need to get ideas of like the stuff the is in a recording studio. I would also like to know how I could soundproof the studio as well. Thanks!

Well – I was just in a reccording studio today, so it’s fresh in my mind.

You need microphones (1+ depending on how many vocals needed), special instrument microphones (1+), a mixing board, computer audio software, microphone stands, music stands, a couch for comfort, a tall stool (some artists perfer to be seated, others chose to stand), head sets, a CLEAN room (I have been in some disgusting studios and walked right out. It’s a major turnoff if where you perform is cluttered or dirty), a water dispenser, paper cups, and other minimal design elements. ALso make sure you have your resume and business cards handy.

As far as sound proofing is concerned – I reccomend locating someone that treats rooms and acoustics. You would most likely need a professional to do the job right. Search around your area and compare prices & check there references & work.

The best of luck to you! :) I hope this helped

My digital music collection is only around 40GB, but I am sure loads of people have way much more than that!

Thanks for all your answers.

Thats about 36 days worth, if its music you really like that a good amount,
Some of the music i have i’ve never listened to and surprised when i hear it for the first time -

I’m interested in indie music, particularly new music. Can someone point me to the site in the UK which seems to have the best/most, maybe a site where the bands themselves upload their vids?

NME, Q, Absolute radio, Xfm, Radio 1 (zane lowe’s page – for example) Myspace, Last Fm, Youtube, KERRANG, Mojo (google the ones you aren’t familiar with, most are generally music magazines, radio stations etc)

I really like music
and i think music production is something i might enjoy
but i have never done anything like that
i dont even do senior music at school
I play drums and bass guitar (mediocrely)
would it be way too hard to try and do a music production course/degree at uni?
If not, what sort of degrees are there?
(In Qld btw)

Yes, you should be able to – you will probably need to be able to read music at the least, but other than that, degree courses which are not things taught in high schools usually start at the basics. Rather than asking here, you really need to order prospectuses from universities you are interested in and see what they say about the course, as they will explain what kind of prior knowledge you will need to study it (which may well vary from university to university). Even better, once you have this information, contact a course tutor to discuss your concerns. I’m sure they will be happy to help.

Best of luck!

Are there any tips or advice I can get from people about starting a music career in the music industry?

Hey Twon,

I can’t tell from your post if you want to be a professional musician or a music executive. Either way the answer is really more or less the same.

If you want to be a musician learn everything you can about music, get great at vocals or an instrument or both. Learn to read and write music and get comfortable with home recording gear so you can cheaply demo your ideas. Then network your ass off find people to record and perform with and start performing for people even if it means starting at open mic nights. The more people you are able to bring to watch you, the happier a club owner will be and the more likely they will give you a better night or a better time slot to come back the next time. When you are comfortable with your recordings (and take your time doing this- hone your craft) put up a website, a myspace page, videos of you performing live on youtube and try to drive traffic there for people to see you. Be sure and start collecting a mailing list.

If you want to be a music business executive either intern or assist at a big company or if that doesn’t work find a talented local act and help them do all of the things I mentioned above. Check the links below, I think you will find them helpful.

Best,

RIck

Record labels that have a good reputation for releasing high quality folk metal. I know that Nuclear Blast is one, are there any other good ones? And what are some notable bands they have on the label?

Einheit Produktionen lists Thrudvangar, Finsterforst, and Black Messiah, which I like, among others…
I guess Twilight Vertrieb has Thronar and TrollfesT.
Century Media has Finntroll and Hellheim and Turisas.
Spinefarm has some…
Err… I don’t know. Sorry if I’m not being very helpful, I tried, haha. I don’t go by the label, personally.

I know about as much about music as the average college graduate. I am not a musician but I am planning on learning to play guitar. Would studying music theory be of any benefit to me as an amateur guitarist? If so, how much? I really am not even sure what is meant by music theory to be honest. One of the main reasons I am interested is because I think that my son may have some musical talent and I want to do what I can to encourage and cultivate his potential. Thanks.

Thanks for asking this question. Many people are too intimidated to even inquire. NEWSFLASH!!! I’ve taught music theory to 8-yr.-olds, and have studied it myself since I was 6 years old.

The benefits to be reaped are myriad and can apply to many other areas of life. You can learn as much or as little as you like and go at your own speed with a little help from books and internet sites.

To get a better handle on what it’s all about, I recommend:

Then, check out some of the following:

And yes, there is a book titled "Music Theory for Dummies."

The most wonderful thing about understanding Music Theory is that it applies to all instruments. In addition to helping you become a good guitarist, you can also learn (at the same time) keyboards, as the piano keyboard is pretty much at the root of it all.

Another benefit is that MT is a great topic for discussion in just about any gathering of people.

If you and/or your son decide on taking lessons, make sure that the instructor teaches theory as well as guitar. I cannot stress this enough. It provides for faster learning and gives one a comprehensive realm of knowledge with which to work.

I commend you not only for wanting to encourage your child, but for your willingness to be an active participant. Good parenting!

I’m about to buy a laptop, but I will use it for music recording. I would like to know what are the best things for the laptop to have to be a great music recorder, (audio cards, ram, etc)

For processing Audio:
Processor and Ram.

The most Important part though will be the Sound Card. The Build in Audio probably will not Cut it so you will need to make sure it has the proper Add-In card Slot for the Sound card you will want.

How do I get a record company to sign my band?

Okay, My band will be getting our first Cd out in spring, but how the hell do we get signed by either :D ecay Dance,Fueled By Ramen,Fearless Records,Victory, Or Nitro Records,or HollyWood Records. So explain to me : How can I contact the record companies, and have them sign with my band, i sent ALL of them messages explaining all of this, please help!

Send them copies of your CD through the mail along with a letter giving a brief bio of your band and its members and hope for the best. Also send out copies of your CD to as many radio stations as you can find. If by chance someone working at a station hears something they like they might start playing it on the air and someone might pick it up from there.
There are so many bands trying to get a record deal of course-but all you can do is just keep trying. Keep trying to get the right person in the right place to hear your songs.
