I want to start my own recording studio, but I don’t know how to start one and what things I need. Should I use an Apple computer, or a Dell? Should I use Garage Band, or FL Studio? What other things will I need in order to begin?

My husband is a producer and from what i know the best computer to use for recording and such is an apple computer. some good recording programs are reasons and pro tools. Garage band is an okay program for a beginner. but wit both reasons and pro tools you will need a controller (keyboard) it makes it a heck of alot easier to make your own beats rather than using the boring loops on garage band. if you have any other questions hit me up. im sure he can tell you anything you want to know

I was thinking today that the reason mp3 music is compressed is so that a lot of songs fit into an mp3 player. But they adopted that format when mp3 players still had 128 mb and 30 gb at the most. Now days it is hard to find an mp3 player with less than 2gb capacity. It won’t be long before we see an mp3/media player with 1tb. Will a less compressed/higher def digital format catch on?

You have multiple options.

a) Use AAC (or .mp4), better quality at about the same compression
b) Use MP3s at higher bit rate, say 256 kbits/s vs 128 kbits/
c) Use uncompressed audio (like PCM or WAV)
d) Use Lossless compression

Many people use their player to store video; that takes A LOT more space than music.

I have been researching into some of the music institutes around the US and I am wondering if Audio Engineering is the course I should be looking at for music production.

I want to produce my OWN material and not just post-master/mix other artists. What should I be looking for?

Any helpful information would be appreciated, thanks!

You dont need classes for that unless you plan on mixing it yourself as well. I produce music, and send it away to someone else to mix it, even though I took music production 101 and Mixing and Mastering 101 (which are the classes you are referring to). Costs me about $150 per song to have it mixed and mastered. It saves me alot of time and trouble so its worth it to me just to have someone else do that part, and I just do the main producing. When you’re making music, its just like an artist. You can learn how to use programs and things like that in a class, but you cant learn talent from someone else. Lets say you’re a rap producer. An artist needs a good beat to rap over. They don’t care what kind of degree you have, all they care about is how you’re beat sounds. They aren’t going to pass up on a good beat if the producer doesn’t have a degree. Majority of producers do not have degrees, they just spent alot of time locking themselves in their rooms learning how to produce. Mixing and Mastering is the more technical side of it, that is a little talent, and alot of stuff that you would learn in a class. So if you want to do that, you should take any mixing and mastering class. The type of school doesnt matter, because again, the people who will want to hire you want someone who can mix and master well, they arent looking at a degree, they are listening to your music to decide. To produce your own music, all you need is a computer and a program. I have pro tools for recording (costs about $2,500) and I have fl studio for producing (costs about $300). With these 2 things, and a good audio card and fast computer, you have everything you need. Maybe just buy some books to learn how to use them and you’re on your way.

I am looking to get into the music industry- I am very passionate about music and have 2 degrees in business management and entrepreneurship. I want to learn more about the business aspect of the industry and get a more in depth understanding of the industry as a whole. Any book recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi…
I am a big fanatic of the music industry myself. I am an upcoming R&B and Pop singer and I am trying to get a record deal. I am also trying to learn a lot about the business side of the industry. One way to learn a lot about the music industry and making music (in general) is to study courses at Berklee Online Music School, www.berkleemusic.com. They have great courses there and so many people have taken courses there and they said that it is a very good online school. You should really check out the website and find out more info about the courses. I am currently enroll in the Music Business Course there, but the course will begin in January. Some books that can give you informative information about the music industry are: All You Need To Know About the Music Business: 6th Edition by Donald Passman, This Business of Music, 10th Edition (This Business of Music) This Business of Artist Management, The Future of Music: Manifesto for the Digital Music Revolution. These are just a few books on the music industry…try to get the latest edition of these books. If you need anymore more info you can eamil me at marqueshottie@yahoo.com. I am glad to find someone who is really interested in the music industry despite the fact that it is not doing well at the current moment!!!!!

What i mean by that is, if there was a band, and not that many people have heard of them, and only got like 1000 friends on myspace and they sound really good and creative and a record label wants to sign them, how do they gain popularity, what does the Label really do ?…

im in a similar boat, you have to do most of the work your self. the label takes care of tax issues and etc, but you have to book your shows, you have to promote and make public appearances on time and sell your cd’s out the trunk, not the album but a sampler, sort of like a mixtape. use your imagination, and make it work!

I’ve been playing guitar for almost 6 years now. I have a basic grasp of scales, I know basic music theory. But my songwriting is limited completely to what I know. With the keys and modes I can play. I understand why the notes go together. But there is so much more to learn. Im getting bored with the same keys. So Help me out yeah?

Well hey man it sounds like you just need to expand your current knowledge.

If you learned the modes correctly, then you should be able to jam in all 24 Major / Minor Keys.

If you understand the Major Formula then you should be able to write out all 24 Major / Minor Keys.

If you have the basics of Music Theory, then you should be able to understand this.

Find out which Key you want to write a song in. Say the Key of G Major.

Figure out the notes by applying the Major Formula. The Key of G is: G, A, B, C, D, E, and F#.

Music Theory says the 1st, 4th, and 5th tone of a Key are Major Triads. The 2nd, 3rd, and 6th tones are a Minor Triad. And the 7th note is diminished. So right there you know all your basic chords to play:
G Major, A Minor, B Minor, C Major, D Major, E Minor, and F# Diminished.

If you know your modes, then match your modes to the right note.
Ionian starting on G Note
Dorian starting on A note
Phrygian starting on B note
Lydian starting on C Note
Mixolydian starting on D Note
Aeolian starting on E note
Locrian starting on F# note

Then pick any chord progression:
I, IV, V
vi, I, IV, V
IV, I, V, I
vi, iii, ii, I

Whatever sounds good to you.

So the knowing what traids Major / Minor / Diminished of the Key, then picking a progression will start your rhythm. Knowing what modes will help you find your solo / lead ground.

If you need any other help, feel free to email / im me. I have a bunch of spreadsheets and docs on theory and modes. Good Luck.
