I will use an example to answer your question:

Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" never reached the charts as a single until 2007. Why? It was never released as a single, although throughout the 70's, it was one of the most requested songs for radio stations. In 2007, it was released digitally (along with all their other songs), and finally hit the charts in many countries.

For me, personally, I bought many CD's in the past for artists I would hear on the radio, and it turns out I only liked that one or two songs on the entire CD. Now, I can pick and choose which songs I want to purchase, and don't have to buy the entire CD if I don't want to. Some songs I like, but not enough to buy the entire CD. I can still help support the band by buying the song(s) I like, and not waste my money buying songs I don't like.
