So my roommate is wanting to drop out of college and move to Nashville to become a music star. Is this wise? It’s just as the title above says. I don’t know if this is a smart choice for him, and I support in just about everything he does. I also told him my favorite quote "You miss 100% of the shots that you don’t take". I don’t know if I should tell him this is smart or not. I’ve heard lonely guys in Nashville with a guitar roaming around are a dime a dozen…
How close is he to graduation? If he only has a year or so left, then I think it would be wise for him to finish and then pursue his musical dream.
If he’s only in first or 2nd year, then I suppose "nothing ventured, nothing gained" applies. However, he needs to be aware that the chances of him becoming a rock star are about the same as the chances of Greenland becoming the next major world power. References :
Well, what was he doing in college that made him want to drop out so badly? I can understand if he rebelled against a major he didn’t like… but he could have easily changed it to Music or Voice if he wants to be a musician so badly.
No, this is not a wise choice- even if he is a fantastic singer. Before he moves away anywhere, he should really try setting up local gigs around the town he’s in now and see how the crowd reacts. If he’s good enough, and performs in enough venues, then he should earn enough popularity and reputation around town to travel to maybe another city- but not another state.
I would recommend that he gets some kind of education, even from a certificate program at a local community college so that he has at least SOMETHING to fall back on to pay the rent. If he absolutely insists on moving away to start a music career, he really needs a "Plan B" to help him pay the bills that come with being a starving artist. If he has a backup to fall back on, and persue singing a few nights a week at some venues, then I think he could be set.
What kind of music does he want to sing? Nashville is for mostly Country singers. If he wants to become a Rock star, or sing in a different genre, then he should consider California, New York, Chicago, Florida, or any other Metro area. References :

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. He can always go back to college later in life.
How about coffee shops near school now, or a college in Tenn.
