Propellerhead Software’s product specialist James Bernard kicks off this series of tutorials with a demonstration on creative uses of the Record mixer’s dynamics section to create rhythmic gating effects, also known as ‘trance gate’.

@spiderlelo
“WHY HAS PROPELLERHEAD NOT ALLOWED REASON TO USE VST’s?”
My guess it to simply piss everybody off. They didn’t even include MIDI out.
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:03 am
@spiderlelo I agree. . . sick of rewiring.

i’ve got a question that has been bugging me for a while. WHY HAS PROPELLERHEAD NOT ALLOWED REASON TO USE VST’s? There are some really awesome VST’s out there and if propellerhead could integrate them with reason it would open up a whole lot of doors for reason users. .

Are these going to be 52 videos released every week ??
I need to catch up

@MrROTD-I think the attraction of virtual patching comes from gear lust. If you are not into hardware than remember one thing. . . you can’t run software without hardware. For my first Record session I sampled a Micron into a MPC 60 and then tracked the beat I was working on into Record. I could have saved a lot of time by working only within software, but the process I used gave me results I never intended but was very happy with plus I had a great time!

Thanks James. . . that’s why Reason and now Record too, is just awesome. . . it’s so intuitive and theres no limit! I’ve tried so much DAW’s but most of the time they really suck IN CREATING MUSIC!!

Not only decent time stretch algorithms. But sample loop start/end automation.
August 22nd, 2010 at 7:57 am
Nice. Can something like this be done without Record?
August 22nd, 2010 at 8:24 am
ok, cool
Im REason user (~lover) since 1. 0 demo
. . . still busy with it. . . but missed the ‘record’ upcoming little bit.
propellerhead’s software-concepts are always unique and outstanding stuff

@aerobique
no. it’s Record and if you own Reason you can use all of the Reason devices inside of Record.
So, technically what I am using here is considered the Reason and Record Duo.
August 22nd, 2010 at 8:41 am
reason “record” – its some sort of audio bridge
August 22nd, 2010 at 9:33 am
is this Reason 4 ?
August 22nd, 2010 at 10:25 am
just love this software to bits ! reason is awesome. . so flexible n creative, with record as well its like entering a parallel universe. sooo many possibilities n the sound is much much better
August 22nd, 2010 at 10:55 am
@bobbylosh I very much agree that it’s a poor worker that blames his tools instead of his or her own ambition.
If you want or need vst’s, simply Rewire into ProTools, Motu Digital Performer, or Cubase (or whatever DAW you prefer).
Everyone should find whatever works best for themselves. It’s not magic; it takes a little work, folks.
August 22nd, 2010 at 11:13 am
that’s so true I think people who rant about reason and it not having vst’s are people who are being lazy and not willing to spend a bit of extra time to develop their own unique sound. It’ s the bad workman that blames his tools
August 22nd, 2010 at 11:32 am
Propellerhead software sounds as good as you make it sound. Record is a tremendous improvement! If it doesn’t sound great when you use it, maybe it’s because you need to develop more skill . . . .
I use it and I love it.
August 22nd, 2010 at 11:57 am
reason still sounds like shit compared to other softwares
August 22nd, 2010 at 12:28 pm
its reason + record, an other program of propellorhead:P
August 22nd, 2010 at 1:11 pm
yup its possible.
August 22nd, 2010 at 1:51 pm
Nice trick James. Good stuff.
Now get out your chair and kick Theresia and the other developers asses till they make a proper programmable timestretch algorithm for the NN-XT
