Good analogy. Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. In technical terms, you are reducing the range between the loudest and quietest sounds, essentially making your song/beat sound more rounded and equal.

it compresses d freq. so it won’t go over whatever u set it up 2. for example if u have a person talking & then that person starts screaming obviously u r gonna hear a big difference on d volume. But if u compress it whenever d person scream it’s not gonna blow ur head cuz d freq stays below whatever u set it up 2. . . that’s roughly what a compressor does. . .

very descriptive tutorial great for teaching me use of the effect, but i still dont understand what the compressor does to the sound exactly, and how would i evnelope and trigger these effects in the song? ive been making hip hop beats for about a year now and im trying to get into more of an electro house kind of deal. help would be much appreciated.

To compress audio based on gain is to dynamically reduce or increase volume based on the current peak volume of the input track. Generally it’s decrease. For instance, a very loud instrument may be so loud that its sound is becoming too harsh and “square”, therefore you use a compressor so that whenever the volume gets too loud to sound good it becomes reduced in an appropriate manner.
