Best way to learn and understand music theory?

I play guitar a little, I can read tab. I want to learn how to read music and about music theory. Im totally lost and dont understand a thing. Is there any resource you would recommend to me? a website or book? I would like to know the basics first of course, then start learning more and more advanced stuff. Thanks to you all!

Oh and one more question. Is it necessary to know the theory to read music? Or is that the same thing?

I take a music theory course in school, and I find it a really enjoyable experience. Our teacher have recommended several helpful websites to us:
http://www.teoria.com/index.html
It’s a really good website that has tutorials and exercises and it helps you learn the basics. and:
http://www.emusictheory.com/practice.html

For text book I recommend Tonal Harmony by Stefan Kostka and Dorothy Payne. It’s a fairly readable introductory textbook.

I’m not quite sure what you mean by reading music but knowing some music theory certainly helps understand how a piece of music works.
