One relatively new (2007) published book that I have enjoyed
and has helped me in improving my musical skills is:
The Everything Music Theory Book (with CD)
by Marc Schonbrum. $19.95 at your local book store.

This book 17 Chapters (273 pages) starts with:
Review of The Basics and ends with:
Advanced Harmony,Jazz Harmony, and Transposition.

Mr.Schonbrun is an educator, musician (classical guitarist)
and author. This book will make a very good addition to any musician's library.
References :
I am a student of the classical guitar, Mandolin, and
Baritone Ukulele. My musical knowledge and skills have
improved with the aid of this book.

I think "Tonal Harmony" is a standard college text book for classical theory. I have many fond memories using that book. I'm sure it's available used at some online store.

The Jazz Theory Book by Mark Levine seems to be pretty popular, according to Amazon.
References :
http://www.amazon.com/Jazz-Theory-Book-Mark-Levine/dp/1883217040/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1229519667&sr=8-1
