I teach violin and would like an idea of some of your favorite music theory books. Workbooks are good, but theory books as well – especially those that concentrate or really explain scales and keys.
What is the best music theory book?

Dorothy Croft – Violin Theory For Beginners: Bk. 1, Bk. 2
Mel Bay, Beginner Violin Theory For Children: Bk. 1, Bk. 2
For adults:
Essentials of Music Theory: Complete Self-Study Course
Complete Book of Scales, Chords, Arpeggios & Cadences

Of the ones I’ve read, all of these are very good;
Harmony and Voice Leading – Aldwell and Schachter
Harmony – Walter Piston
Mark Levine – Jazz Theory Book
Counterpoint – Walter_Piston
Classical form – William E. Caplin
Ranked in order of how student friendly and relevant they are.
