Hi, I’m in a band and I wanna make an amateur recording studio in my basement for recording demos and stuff…
I have a $200 budget, so I want the best I can get for that!
We have a vocalist, 2 guitarists, a bassist, and a drummer, so we’d need something that supports all that…
I’m completely new to this, so what equipment do I need to get?
Specific brands?
What does it all do?
Also, how can I burn CDs of our music?
Soundproofing?
Thanks!

As a first step, download and install the Audacity program (Free!), which will allow you to record and to make multi track recordings if you wish. Make sure you also download the LAME program referred to and which is available elsewhere. You can then export the recordings as MP3s, as well as wmf files, ogg files, or other formats.
I also tried out Beatcraft for a week’s free trial, and think this is wonderful, easy software for creating drum tracks, and will pay the $35 for it when I can. I strongly recommend this software as well.
I can’t help you much with the soundproofing, at least on that budget, but maybe you can score a lot of used carpeting from craigslist or wherever and panel the walls with it.
It will help.
You will do all your recording on your computer, so you can simply make your own cd’s. If burning one cd at a time is a drag, you can go to a cd pressing service and the cost will be around $2000 for 1000 cd’s (last time I checked…)
You might be able to find a machine that burns multiples of cds one eBay, or maybe not. I haven’t looked.
If you want to add some instrument your band doesn’t play, or add additional vocals, try one of the on-line music collaboration sites like the ones mentioned here:
